Scallop Kiwi Roll – Basho / Boston, MA

Scallop Kiwi Roll

Mixed Seafood, Seaweed Salad, Tempura Crumb, topped with Scallop, Kiwi, and Black Tobiko

After seeing this intriguing combination on the menu, I knew I had to try it.  I actually love scallops and I enjoy a good kiwi here and there, especially with strawberries.  However, I wasn’t very optimistic about this pairing, but I had to give it a whirl and hope for the best.

While I’m normally a fan of tobiko in general, I particularly found the black tobiko in this roll to be slightly overpowering.  the kiwi adds a nice and refreshing taste to the overall roll.  Specifically, the kiwi adds some nice acidity and a slight sweetness as well.  The scallions are nice, but hardly noticeable.  The seaweed salad particularly stands out and is quite delicious.  This roll is well balanced with a hint of heat that lingers in your mouth afterwards.  Solid and unique roll.

Fairly unique roll.  The textures of the kiwi and scallop can be a downer for those seeking some crunch.  Perhaps if there was cucumber, or the tempura was fried slightly longer it would be more balanced in terms of overall textures?
