Spicy Tempura Portabella Mushroom, Asparagus inside topped with Crunchy Spicy Salmon
Along with my order of the Village Vibe Special Roll during my trip to Amber in New York, I couldn’t turn down another intriguing roll. This unique roll sported an ingredient that I don’t believe I’ve ever had the honor of trying in a sushi roll, Portabella Mushroom. Of course, I couldn’t pass up on this opportunity to see how it would mesh with the other ingredients.
Fortunately, while it is a Tempura Portabella Mushroom, you still get the nice earthy smell from the mushroom. You also get that tender and meaty texture from the mushroom when you sink your teeth into the roll. Surprisingly, the asparagus actually outshines the portabella mushroom, not a good thing ;( First of all, I love me some asparagus. Not sure if there’s a better pairing than steak, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. My biggest issue, you can even see it in the picture below, the asparagus is massive in proportion to the whole roll. If they were so content with that large of asparagus, at least give me more portabella mushroom. The spice was just right, not too harsh, and not too subtle. Salmon gets somewhat lost in this roll.The crunchy salmon on top is forgettable of course with the asparagus making up the majority of the crunch in this roll. I was somewhat let down, which is bad considering I didn’t have high hopes to begin with.
Again, that big piece of asparagus need to be smaller, or less obtrusive to the overall roll. OK flavors, just a couple of tweaks in terms of proportions and sizes and this roll is salvageable.
