Mango, Cucumber, Grilled Pineapple wrapped with sweet Shrimp, touch of Mango Sauce
I was quite curious how this roll would taste with not only an emphasis on the mango flavor, but an overall tropical feel with pineapple in the roll as well. The first glaring thing I noticed was how sweet the mango sauce was. One might think this would be completely off-putting due to the traditional fresh salty seafood taste of sushi, but in fact the subtle tartness of the actual mango fruit in the roll surprisingly balances out the over sweetened mango sauce. The shrimp in the roll is nice, but nothing amazing… The grilled pineapple was hardly noticeable, most likely masked from the dueling mango flavors. Overall, while this roll was quite unique to me, the flavors weren’t doing it for me. Maybe I’d have to try this roll on a hot summer day and fully enjoy the tropical flavors alongside a mojito of some sort, but not today.
As previously mentioned, wasn’t exactly thrilled with the abundant tropical components. I think the roll could do without the pineapple personally. You hardly noticed the texture, and the pineapple flavor was pretty much an afterthought. Also, the shrimp was nothing special, possibly a different fish might have been better with the mango flavors? Just off the top of my head, something like salmon might do well. And thinking way outside the box: tilapia, halibut, or possibly even swordfish.
